William James Swann b.1951

William was born in the Derbyshire Peak District.

William studied life drawing, particularly anatomical and biological drawing, as part of his inter-collated studies to support his degree course at the University of Edinburgh. His life drawing and plein air painting skills were further developed with Buxton Artists, a professional art society established to support artistic development and to promote member exhibitions.
William is a committed plein air painter. He is inspired by the light and atmosphere of the west coast and islands of Scotland. He has painted with plein air groups, including the Wapping Group and works in all weathers to capture fleeting effects of light.
A television programme was made for ITV in 2008 of William working on location on the Essex Marshes. This was broadcast on ITV1 and networked on other ITV stations. William is an elected Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts. William’s work is in private collections in the UK, USA and Europe.
