Bob Grimson - Every week in the gallery we receive approaches from artists wishing to exhibit their work. Given that our exhibition programme is arranged some 1 year to 18 months ahead, there is seldom anything that we can do in the short term.

And then, someone calls in, hoping to show their works, and the “wow factor” is there. This was the case when Bob Grimson popped in.

Marine art is a highly specialised field, yet in terms of subject matter is full of nostalgia, history, drama and movement. In terms of present day artists, few have the knowledge, skill and empathy with the subject necessary to create paintings of note. We believe Bob Grimson has it all, and these works illustrate what we mean – they are really quite splendid.

Bob was born in Poole in 1945 and grew up in a Devon coastal village. He left school at 15 and went to sea. He has been sailing since the age of 10 and has sailed thousands of miles including 3 transatlantic crossings in boats he built himself.

With his wife Jean he lived for 16 years on their last self-built 37ft Gaff Ketch and during that time sailed to South America, The Caribbean, USA and Canada.

Although Bob has no formal art training, he has painted in oils since a boy and has successfully exhibited his Marine art both in the UK and abroad.

The fine detail in his realism style paintings can only come from a deep and thorough knowledge of historic sailing vessels as well as a close natural affinity with the sea and all it’s elements. Each painting usually carries a scripted story penned by Bob himself and the history and charisma behind these magnificent vessels lends additional fascination to the work.

We are genuinely proud to exclusively represent Bob’s work in Scotland.
